Their True Motives

The Guerrilla girls exist to this day and they are no longer just focusing on women in the art world but women in the world as a whole. Many art-related institutions did not want anything to do with them at first because the group had exposed many pieces of information about them which had, at one point, given them a negative image but that eventually changed. Several institutions have been inspired to focus on the inclusion of women in places such as museums and society in general. The Guerrilla Girls have not forgotten about the issue present in the art world but now they are also mainly trying to fight for women’s equality in situations that may regard topics like politics and theatre, along with other things. Despite the years that have passed by, the Guerrilla Girls are continuing to fight for the recognition that women deserve and have worked for in society. They utilize their posters as their weapons and even though many people in the past and even now have had a hard time accepting the truth that the signs reveal, the Guerrilla girls are not looking to rest until discrimination ends.

The Guerrilla girls are very active online and even spend some of their time giving lectures to inform others about the challenges that women continue to face. There have been roughly 60 members in the group throughout the years and they have remained anonymous. They prefer the public to focus more on the issues present rather than focusing on their identities. The title “Guerrilla Girls” stuck to them after a spelling mix-up but it actually worked out for them in the long run. One of their most recognized posters shows the back of the body of a naked woman with a gorilla mask on her and the slogan on the poster states, “Do women have to be naked to get into the Met Museum?” The poster is a way of protesting the fact that while women artists are barely included in museum events, there is a lot of artwork that displays the bodies of them utilizing them as nothing more than an object. This group of feminists have held lectures in many different areas of the world so that more people know about what they do and what they stand for.
