The Women of the Movement

Gloria Steinem is a journalist, political activist and feminist. One of her most famous articles was “A Bunny’s Tale”. She had gone undercover as a Playboy Bunny to see how the women were treated. She created Ms. Magazine with Dorothy Pitman Hughes in 1971.

Betty Friedan was a writer, activist, and feminist. Her book The Feminine Mystique is often credited with sparking second wave feminism. In 1966 she co-founded and was elected the president of the National Organization of Women (NOW).

Angela Davis is a political activist, academic and author. She was a counterculture activist in the 1960s. She was involved in the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party. She is a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She was the former director of the university’s Feminist Studies department.

Billie Jean King is a tennis player, advocate for gender equality and social justice. In 1973 she won the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match. She was the founder of the Women’s Tennis Association and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Wilma Mankiller was an activist, writer, social worker and community developer. She was the first Woman to serve as Chief of the Cherokee Nation. As a social worker she was mainly focused on children’s issues
